Beach Session Frequent Questions

Frequent Questions

To help you feel prepared for your Naples or Marco Island family beach session, this FAQ covers the key details about locations, timing, weather, clothing, galleries, and session policies..

What should we wear for beach photo sessions?

This is one of the most common questions Mark gets — and it matters more than most people think. Here are a few simple guidelines:

Coordinate, don’t match.
Choose colors in the same family — soft blues, warm neutrals, sandy tones, whites — rather than identical outfits. It looks intentional without looking stiff.

Avoid busy patterns and logos.
Stripes, solids, and subtle textures photograph beautifully. Large logos and busy prints draw the eye away from your faces.

Dress for the beach.
Comfortable clothing that moves naturally is usually better than anything overly formal. Light, breathable fabrics work best. Think “Lands End Summer Catalog”. Barefoot is always an option — and often the best one.

What to avoid.
Avoid dark colors, black, dark navy, dark brown, and olive green. Or, one person dressed drastically different from the rest.

What happens if the weather is bad?

I’ll always do my best to make your session happen, but sometimes the beach and the weather have their own ideas. If skies turn stormy, we can often switch to another spot or find a better time. I keep extra spaces in my weekly schedule just for these “plan B” moments (the benefit of being a full-time photographer). And if we can’t make it work, I’ll gladly refund your deposit and session fee.

Is my deposit refundable?

The $50 retainer is refundable only if the session is cancelled by Mark Block Photography due to weather.

Your retainer reserves your date and time. Once your session is booked, I hold that spot for you and turn away other inquiries for the same time. For that reason, retainers are not refundable for client cancellations, travel changes, schedule conflicts, illness, no-shows, or changes of plans.

Because beach conditions can change quickly, I make the final weather call when needed. Weather cancellations may include unsafe or poor photo conditions such as sustained winds, strong gusts, heavy overcast skies with no usable light, rain, or a named storm affecting the area. If I cancel the session for weather, your retainer can either be refunded or applied to a rescheduled date, if one is available.

What is the best time of day for beach portrait sessions?

The best times are early morning or late afternoon into sunset. Sunset sessions usually offer the most flattering golden-hour light, while morning sessions can be a good choice for younger children, smaller groups, or families with busy vacation schedules.

What beach location will we be using for our session?

Sessions are photographed in Naples and Marco Island. The exact beach is selected based on your group size, ages, mobility needs, parking, weather, time of year, and the look you want for your photos. If you are staying at a beachside resort we’ll most likely do the session there.

Will I receive every image made during the session?

No. The final gallery includes only the carefully selected and edited images from your session.

I take multiple photos throughout the session to capture the best expressions, natural moments, and flattering angles. Afterward, I review the full set and remove duplicates, closed eyes, missed expressions, test shots, and unflattering in-between images.

Your delivered gallery is intentionally curated for quality, consistency, and overall feel. Final images are provided as finished JPG files only. RAW files and unedited images are not provided.

When will the finished images be ready?

Your edited images are delivered in a private online gallery, usually in 14 days —However, during peak times it may take slightly longer.

How will I receive my photos?

Your images will be placed in an online gallery, making it easy to share with other family members — Everyone whom you give the gallery PIN to will be able to download the high resolution jpg images.

You’ll have 30 days of complimentary download access. After 30 days, galleries are archived, and can only be reactivated for viewing and print orders. Full-resolution digital downloads after the 30-day period are available for $150 per set.

Are extended families welcome in one session?

Yes. Extended families are welcome when everyone is part of the same family tree, including grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren. For larger groups, a longer session is usually recommended so there is enough time for group portraits, smaller family combinations, and candid moments.

Can we share a beach session with friends?

Extended family sessions are welcome, including grandparents, parents, and children from the same family tree. Sessions are not designed for multiple unrelated families or large friend groups. Separate sessions can be arranged when needed.

What type of editing is included/excluded?

All delivered images are professionally edited for color, exposure, contrast, and overall consistency in my natural, true-to-life style.

NOTE: Editing does not include retouching physical features, body reshaping, head swaps, face replacements, compositing, or removing permanent physical characteristics, or clothing alterations. My goal is to preserve genuine expressions, real interactions, and honest moments without artificial manipulation.

What is your copyright and print license policy?

All images are protected by U.S. copyright law and remain the property of Mark Block Photography. Clients receive a personal use license to download, print, and share images on personal social media, provided the images are not edited, altered, filtered, or used commercially.

Images may not be sold, licensed, redistributed, published, used for advertising, or posted on blogs without written permission.

Mark Block Photography may use images for portfolio, website, social media, and marketing purposes.

Can someone other than the person who booked the session contact you?

For clarity, I only communicate with the person who booked the session. They’re welcome to collect questions from anyone in the group and send them to me directly so all details stay organized and consistent.

Holiday Session Policy

Photo sessions scheduled during the 10 days surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas require full payment at the time of booking. Because these dates are in exceptionally high demand, all payments are nonrefundable and cannot be transferred to another date. The only exception is if I cancel the session due to unsuitable weather, in which case your payment will be refunded in full.
